Westar Marine Assists in 5G Buoy Deployment for Naval Research
Earlier this summer, Westar Marine Services proudly supported a major milestone in maritime innovation: the successful deployment of a self-powered ocean buoy in Monterey Bay in collaboration with the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), Ocean Power Technologies (OPT), and AT&T.
This buoy marks the first-ever installation of a 5G maritime base station at sea, enabling real-time oceanographic and atmospheric data transmission to researchers onshore. Westar Marine was honored to play a role in this historic operation by assisting with the deployment effort alongside other supporting partners.
A Platform for Real-Time Ocean Sensing and Maritime Connectivity
Deployed five nautical miles off the coast of Monterey, the buoy will power a variety of sensors and data systems using wind and solar energy. The project brings together top research institutions and technology providers to explore next-generation tools for:
Maritime domain awareness
Ocean and weather monitoring
5G-based ship-to-shore communications
Environmental and marine species tracking
As noted in the official report by NPS, the buoy supports ongoing partnerships with institutions like the Hopkins Marine Station, NOAA, and the U.S. Coast Guard, and will contribute to cutting-edge Navy research and marine science initiatives across the Monterey Bay region.
